In March 2005 following the significant tsunami in South East Asia, the Rotary Club of Geelong and a number of local businesses formed a committee to assist the people of Sri Lanka who were affected by the tsunami. After a site visit by Rotarians Anne Friend and Anton Van Doornik, Vilankulam, a village just west of the town of Trincomalee, was selected as an appropriate location to build a health centre to serve local people.
Plans were drawn up and quotations for the work were obtained from local contractors. The total cost of the project is expected to be in the order of AUD$95,000.

In 2009 Anton Van Doornik and his wife, Isobel visited Vilankulm and made a final inspection of the Health Clinic. A few weeks later the completed building was handed over to the Trincomalee General Hospital who will maintain the building and operate the clinic.
A container of donated hospital equipment - beds, sterilizers, walking aids etc was dispatched from Donations in kind to equip the clinic as well as assist the Trincomalee Hospital.
